A course for anyone interested in exploring Judaism—interfaith couples, those considering conversion and Jews looking for adult-level basics—to the fundamentals of Jewish thought and practice. Topics include Jewish holidays and life cycle events, theology and prayer, Israel, history and Hebrew.

Course Requirements: 

Please be sure to read the following before registering:

Classes meet once a week for two hours on weekday evenings. Course requirements include attending at least one planned Friday Night Shabbat Experience in addition to the weekly class, date to be determined when class begins.


Tuition for the 18-week course is $320. A non-refundable $50 registration fee is included. The tuition fee allows for either one or two people to attend, and we strongly encourage couples to attend together. If you are yourself a member of a URJ-affiliated Reform congregation, the tuition is $295.

Required Textbooks*

We recommend that you purchase the required textbooks (appr. $110) before the class starts. You can order them online new or used; some may be available at your local bookstore.

Sponsoring Rabbi:

To supplement the class experience, we strongly suggest that you work with a sponsoring rabbi/cantor from a local Reform synagogue. We have established a program to help you connect with a rabbi or cantor in your area who will sponsor you for the duration of the course. If you are converting to Judaism please note that we require you that you meet with a sponsoring rabbi/cantor. The sponsoring rabbi/cantor form can be found below. You can still register for an upcoming class even if you have not yet met with your sponsoring rabbi/cantor. If you need help finding a sponsoring rabbi please contact Caitlin Bromberg, and she will be happy to recommend someone near where you live.

If you are taking the class with a significant other, when registering online:

  1. Please make sure the name of the student who wants to receive the completion certificate is the first person's name you type on the registration page.
  2. After you have completed the information for the primary student, please make sure you click "Add Guest" on the third page and then enter your partner's information, as well.

About the Coordinator

Cantor Caitlin O’Sullivan Bromberg is thrilled to nurture those who wish to explore the ways that Judaism can enhance and enrich their lives. Born and raised Catholic, she became fascinated by Judaism as an adolescent, formally converting after college. During her career she worked in the UJA Federation system as a marketing professional. Cantor Bromberg received the Masters of Sacred Music and ordination as a Hazzan (Cantor) at the Jewish Theological Seminary in 2000. She is a member of both the Reform American Conference of Cantors and the Conservative Cantors Assembly. Cantor Bromberg currently serves as the Cantor of Temple Israel and Jewish Community Center of Ridgewood, New Jersey as well as the Introduction to Judaism Coordinator for the URJ in New York.
