Rabbi Yael Vurgan

Rabbi Yael Vurgan grew up in a secular family in Rishon L'Zion and is a leader of contemporary Reform Judaism. She holds a BA in Jewish thought and Hebrew literature and an MA in Contemporary Judaism - both from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Rabbi Vurgan has served in pivotal roles at esteemed institutions such as the Van Leer Institute, the Mandel Institute and the Adva Center for Equality and Social Justice. Her expertise in organizational leadership extends to her significant contributions within the Israeli Reform Movement, particularly in the Center for Development of Communal Social Action.

Since she was ordained in 2018 by the Israeli Rabbinic Program at HUC Jerusalem, Rabbi Vurgan has been serving as the regional rabbi in the Shaar HaNegev regional council. Her responsibilities include overseeing spiritual matters in 10 kibbutzim near the Gaza border. Her contributions have been incredibly significant, especially since October 7th.

Rabbi Yael Vurgan has demonstrated her commitment to social causes by participating in peace and coexistence initiatives. She is a former board member of Rabbis for Human Rights.

A proud mother of two boys, Rabbi Yael Vurgan resides in Modi'in, and her journey from a secular upbringing to becoming an ordained rabbi exemplifies her adaptability and dedication. She characterized herself as the happiest rabbi in the world until October 7th; now, she is a pillar of spiritual solace and comfort to her community.

There is no need to explain why there will be no joy on Simchat Torah this year in the western Negev. The looming first anniversary of the massacre is causing anger, frustration, and despair to flood back. As long as hostages are still held in Gaza, residents of the region are still stuck on October 7.
