Is Jeff Sessions on Crack?
The Sotomayor hearings have been creating quite a bit of news, but who would've guessed they would also yield a YouTube sensation?! Well, it might not be a sensation, as it is at 159 views as of this posting, but it is definitely exciting for criminal justice advocates.
During Thursday's hearing, there was a panel that included Wade Henderson, the President and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, and, in welcoming the panel, Senator Sessions (R-AL) told Mr. Henderson, much to the delight of the peanut gallery, that "We're going to do that crack-cocaine thing that you and I have talked about before."
Of course, what he meant was that he wanted to start working to end the disparity between crack and powder cocaine. (Not familiar with the issue? Take a look at my blog post from May or www.crackthedisparity.com). This is very exciting news, especially in light of growing national momentum and support from the Justice Department, Attorney General Eric Holder, and the acclaim of American Violet, a movie that depicts some of the serious problems of our nation's drug policy.
With what is seemingly a message of support from Senator Sessions, who has not typically been in favor of significant and positive reform, the time is ripe for change!
