URGENT: Urge Senate to Pass Paycheck Fairness Act!
Tomorrow, the Senate will have the opportunity to vote on the Paycheck Fairness Act, a piece of legislation that would truly make a difference in the lives of women and families and bring theUnited Statesone step closer to national economic justice.
Women make an average of 77 cents for every dollar that men earn – and the statistics for minorities and mothers are even more appalling. In fact, according to a 2004 study, women’s lifetime earnings are only 38% of men’s earnings! Women and their families rely on these paychecks, as almost 40% of women are the primary breadwinners in their household.
Paycheck fairness is a moral cause, enabling American families to gain the economic security they have earned through lifetimes of hard work. As we read in the Torah, “You shall not defraud your neighbor, nor rob him; the wages of he who is hired shall not remain with you all night until the morning” (Leviticus 19:13). The current system defrauds women by paying them lower wages for the same work performed by men with similar credentials and making it difficult for those women to effectively fight back. Judaism also teaches that all human beings should be treated equally because they are created b’tselem elohim, in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). All workers deserve to be paid fairly for the job they perform, regardless of gender.
The Paycheck Fairness Act would deter pay discrimination by closing loopholes in the Equal Pay Act of 1963 and barring retaliation against workers who disclose their wages. This bill would strengthen the Equal Pay Act to ensure that it provides effective protection against sex-based pay discrimination, allowing women to receive the same remedies in court for pay discrimination as those subjected to discrimination based on race or national origin.
Take action today! Urge your Senators to vote for the Paycheck Fairness Act.
