UPDATE: House Passes Bill to Repeal ACA
The final vote 244-185, the House voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act, this being the chamber’s 33rd attempt at repeal. Both Democrats and Republicans weighed in on the issue on the floor, and Minority leader Pelosi insisted at a rally in the Capitol Visitor Center that the law makes health care a right, not a privilege, for all Americans. It is unlikely that the repeal efforts will reach the Senate.
Today, the House is scheduled to vote on H.R. 6079, a bill that would repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which was recently upheld as constitutional by the Supreme Court. The bill, titled the “Repeal of Obamacare Act”, is the House’s 33rd attempt to repeal the landmark health care legislation signed into law in March 2010. Our nation has been in dire need of health care reform for decades, falling behind the most advanced nations in the world in terms of offering its citizens broad access to affordable health care. If Congress does vote to derail this just and necessary legislation, millions of Americans will be left without affordable access to both the preventative and emergency care they need, putting their health and that of their families on the line. Urge your Representative to protect health care reform! This is an issue of allowing Americans to live in health and dignity. We must recall the teachings of Maimonides, the revered medieval Jewish physician and scholar, who placed health care first on his list of the ten most important communal services that a city should offer its residents (Mishneh Torah, Hilchot De'ot IV: 23).
