Featuring the RAC...
This post is part of a weekly feature on RACblog. Check in at the end of the week for a roundup of stories in which the RAC has been featured!
Over the past few weeks, we have been anxiously following the impact of Anat Hoffman's arrest after she was charged with the "offense" of wearing a prayer shawl and disturbing public order. She vividly described excessive use of force and mistreatment by the police. Anat's account of her arrest, and her work toward a kotel open to egalitarian prayer, can be read here. JTA also noted that Rabbis Jacobs and Saperstein expressed their concern over this situation to Ambassador Michael Oren.
We also monitored closely the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals' ruling, which declared that the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional. JTA covered our reaction, noting that the RAC had joined the Anti-Defamation League's amicus brief in support of the plaintiff, Edith Windsor. The article also quoted Rabbi Saperstein's response to the ruling: "We oppose DoMA because of our unequivocal support for equal rights for all people, including the right to a civil marriage license, reflecting our understanding that the stamp of the Divine is present in each and every human being."
