The Torah In Haiku: Pinchas

God speaks to Moses
You disobeyed at Kadesh
Your days are numbered

Moses speaks to God
I've got to pass the baton
Name a new leader

God speaks to Moses
I have just the man for you
Joshua's the one

In Numbers 27:12-18, God reminds Moses that he will not enter the land because he disobeyed God's command when, after the death of Miriam he struck the rock, instead of speaking to it, to bring forth water (Deut 20:7-13). Moses asks God to name a new leader, so the people will not be "like sheep that have no shepherd." God chooses Joshua, "a man in whom is spirit"
