Celebrate Rosh HaShanah with Shalom Sesame and Rosh HaShanah Hannah

Video and Activities for Families with Young Children

Together with your children, watch this video:

Discuss: Rosh HaShanah reflections

Why do you think Hannah is so excited about Rosh HaShanah? What does it mean to reflect on something? Are there mistakes you made during the last year that you'd like to correct? Have you ever been to synagogue on Rosh HaShanah? What did you see and hear?  If you could meet Rosh HaShanah Hannah, what would you wish her for the New Year?

Activities

  • A fresh start: Each New Year is a "fresh start".  Using art materials, ask your child to create a poster about something she’d like to do better in the coming year, and hang it in her room.

  • Send the message: Rosh Hashanah Hannah is a rockstar, but she sings about many ideas relating to Rosh Hashanah. Ask your child to think of other clever ways to highlight the messages of this important time in the Jewish year. He can create comics, posters or even public service announcements that focus on the messages of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

  • Rosh HaShanah rock: Print out the words to Rosh HaShanah Hannah’s song below.  With your child, add simple choreography. You can perform live or film the song and create a music video to share with your friends and family.

Rosh HaShanah Hannah's Song

It's that time of the year
And something's got me feeling delighted

Rosh HaShanah's almost here
It's really cool and everybody's excited
I can't wait until me and all my friends finally hear the shofar

Chorus:

Wishing you happy New Year
It's time to reflect our mistakes, to correct
Wishing you shanah tovah
In synagogue together we will celebrate a happy new,
You know a happy new year.

Follow where your heart’s at
And say I'm sorry – it's so sweet
The best part is that you get started to a brand new beat

Happy New, say it
Happy New, come on
A happy New Year
I can't wait until me and all my friends finally hear the shofar.

Wishing you - shanah tovah.
It's time to reflect our mistakes, to correct.
Wishing you - Happy New Year, family all together we will celebrate.
Wishing you - Happy New Year, you know in your heart that you've got a fresh start.
Wishing you -
shanah tovah.
Rosh Hashanah, oh, yeah, you know
I'm gonna be wishing you a happy new year.
