Ever wanted to see how relatable the Torah really is? Counselors at URJ Kutz Camp, a Reform Jewish leadership camp for teens ,wanted to do just that. They made awesome raps discussing the weekly Torah portion, or parasha, for an entire year!
This is part of another double parasha*, so let’s dig in. The head priests are told what to do with a scapegoat (you know, when you want to blame the sins on someone else!) Plus, we learn about atonement for sins and are warned against prohibited acts.
Then, in K’doshim, God issues more commandments on how the people should be holy. This is sometimes referred to as "the Holiness Code." Listen to learn some of them!
*Sometimes two Torah portions are read together on one Shabbat, making it a double parasha.
Saturday morning and the peeps are here
It’s time for Shabbat – let me get a cheer
We’ll talk about Moses, rituals, and holiness too
Ayyoo Matt, you know what to do
We jump back to last week, like we always do
Tazria-M’tzora, whatcha you got for the crew
We learned about birth, diseases, and leprosy
Pretty hard to top that, but soon we’ll see
Moving on to this week, we got a double portion coming
Acharei Mot-K’doshim we keep it running
We remember Nadab and Abihu for sure
But Aaron’s got to sacrifice to keep staying pure
In the 7th month on the 10th day
We learn about the rules, ain’t no time to play
We talking Yom Kippur and how to atone
For all of our sins and get in the holy zone
Well I’m God and I’m commanding you
You shall be holy and I mean the whole crew
Be good to each other and include the stranger
Follow my ways and they’ll be no danger
Well I’m Moses and I hear you God
We’ll all be holy, the whole Israelite squad
Thanks for the help, you’re pretty on fleek
Can’t wait for all the guidance coming next week
Thanks for listening to our 50th rap
Stay tuned for more, we’re putting ourselves on the map
This has been your, Shabbat Sha-Rap!!
