B’reishit for Teens: Shabbat Sha-raps

B'reishit, Genesis 1:1−6:8

Have you ever been curious how relatable the Torah really is? A group of staff from the Kutz365 Alumni Network decided to spend an entire year rapping the weekly Torah portion, or parasha, from the Torah. Shabbat Sha'Raps started at camp in the summer of 2016, and then grew through Zoom over the course of an entire year. Filmed from Zoom boxes around the globe, this creative interpretation of Torah is a fun and easy way to understand the weekly Torah portion. Join Evan, Matt, Melissa, and lots of special guests on this joyful journey of discovering Torah!

In this week's parasha, we learn about the creation of the world, from the first light in the sky to Adam and Eve. They live in the garden of Eden, but things go wrong and they eventually get kicked out. Listen to the rap to hear the story unfold, as we learn how Adam and Eve have children who have children… eventually leading to us!

Saturday morning and the peeps are here
It’s time for Shabbat – let me get a cheer
We’ll talk about creation, the garden, the great flood, too,
Ayyoo Matt, you know what to do

Just imagine a great big world out there
With no life, no hope our Earth was bare
Then God said loudly “let there be light”
The sun came out and was really bright

In all of six days the Earth was created
The birds and the bees, the seas and the trees
The fishes and the animals were quite elated
God chooses to rest on the seventh day
Say hello to Shabbat and take time to pray

We now turn our attention to the Garden of Eden
A beautiful place where apples can be eaten
Adam was created, and then came Eve
But they broke the rules, so they had to leave
You see a snake appeared and tricked them too
God said leave, and they went poo-poo
No matter what they did, we know one thing
Each one of us, b’tzelem elohim!

Moving on in the show, it’s Cain and Abel
They’re brothers alright, but that’s a pretty loose label
Cain kills Abel, it’s a huge transgression
Am I my brother’s keeper, that’s a pretty big question
Throwback to the summer, y’all know the deal
Time to count the generations, we’re keeping it real

Here come the generations, ladies and gentleman
Here come the generations, the moment you’ve been waiting for
Here come the generations, we got to count some people|
Here come the generations, let’s begin

Adam and Eve start off the line
Add Seth and Enosh, they’re pretty fine
Kenan, Mahalel, and Jared too
Enoch, Methuselah, and Noah’s crew

Thanks for listening to our twenty-second rap
Stay tuned for more, we’re putting ourselves on the map
This has been your – Shabbat Sha’Rap!
