Eikev for Teens: Shabbat Sha-raps

Eikev, Deuteronomy 7:12–11:25

Ever wanted to see how relatable the Torah really is? Counselors at URJ Kutz Camp, a Reform Jewish leadership camp for teens ,wanted to do just that. They made awesome raps discussing the weekly Torah portion, or parasha, for an entire year!

In this parasha, Moses tells the Israelites to follow God’s laws, and how it will be good if they remember the rules. He also reminds them how many times they’ve sinned – listen in, it’s a tale to hear!

Saturday morning and the peeps are here
It’s time for Shabbat – let me get a cheer
We’ll talk about Moses, Aaron, the Levites too
Ayyoo Matt, you know what to do

Well Va-et’chanan was just last week
And we just kept wandering, what a streak
It was Hamilton style, and we made it rhyme
Moses plead with God one last time

Now it’s time for Eikev, let’s get it yo
We follow the commandments, and that’s fo sho
God has given us so much in our lives
We gotta be grateful, and then we’ll thrive

Now let’s talk about the other nations in our midst
They’re all super mean and God wants to diss them,
soon they’ll miss their home again
Sorry Anakites, we have to win

Now the Israelites think they’re pretty cool
But let’s get real, sometimes they act a fool
They’ve angered our God plenty of times
Let’s do a short recap of their crimes

Well first, in the wilderness they always mad
Complaining, saying “Well Egypt wasn’t so bad”
And remember that time they made the golden calf
Made Moses split the Ten Commandments right in half

So what does God want? What does God need
For the Israelites to revere God and pay heed
And the prize at the end is much more than money
It’s that awesome land flowing with milk and honey
