Ki Tisa for Teens: Shabbat Sha-raps

Ki Tisa, Exodus 30:11−34:35

Have you ever been curious how relatable the Torah really is? A group of staff from the Kutz365 Alumni Network decided to spend an entire year rapping the weekly Torah portion, or parasha, from the Torah. Shabbat Sha'Raps started at camp in the summer of 2016, and then grew through Zoom over the course of an entire year. Filmed from Zoom boxes around the globe, this creative interpretation of Torah is a fun and easy way to understand the weekly Torah portion. Join Evan, Matt, Melissa, and lots of special guests on this joyful journey of discovering Torah!

In this week’s parasha, Moses takes a census of the people. Then Moses goes up to the mountain to get the tablets. While he’s gone, the people and Aaron build a golden calf. God wants to destroy the people, but Moses tells God not to do so. But Moses sees the calf and gets so angry that he destroys the tablets. Listen to find out what happens next!

Saturday morning and the peeps are here
It’s time for Shabbat – let me get a cheer
We’ll talk about Pharoah, Moses, the Red Sea too
Ayyoo Matt, you know what to do

Throwback to T’tzaveh, we did it live
Straight from Kutz Camp, we had to thrive
We get the everlasting flame, the Ner Tamid
The priests get their duties and take the lead

Ki Tisa, we got a big portion coming
We learn about some oil, but we gotta keep running
We meet Oholiab and Bezalel
They decorate the Tabernacle, ain’t that swell

V’shamru v’nai Yisrael, et haShabbat
We’re gotta keep the Sabbath really well, and give it all we got
It’s a sign of the covenant for all of time
And when Moses descends, we’re in our prime
He’s got two stone tablets, but let’s jump back
To earlier in the portion, we gotta count some people, we’re taking no slack

Here comes the census, ladies and gentleman
Here comes the census, the moment you’ve been waiting for
Here comes the census, the pride of Mt. Sinai
Here comes the census -

But wait, what’s that, what do we have here
They built a golden calf and started to cheer

God wanted to destroy everyone for this crime
But Moses talks him back, not happening this time
But he breaks the tablets and he reprimands
It’s gonna be rough in the desert sands

Moses goes up Sinai cause he cares a lot
And won’t allow the people to throw away their shot
Over 40 days, we get a ton of commands
They’re feeling ready for the Promised Land

Thanks for listening to our 42nd rap
Stay tuned for more we’re putting ourselves on the map
This has been your - Shabbat Sha’Rap!!
