Tol’dot for Teens: Shabbat Sha-raps

Tol'dot, Genesis 25:19−28:9

Have you ever been curious how relatable the Torah really is? A group of staff from the Kutz365 Alumni Network decided to spend an entire year rapping the weekly Torah portion, or parasha, from the Torah. Shabbat Sha'Raps started at camp in the summer of 2016, and then grew through Zoom over the course of an entire year. Filmed from Zoom boxes around the globe, this creative interpretation of Torah is a fun and easy way to understand the weekly Torah portion. Join Evan, Matt, Melissa, and lots of special guests on this joyful journey of discovering Torah!

In this parasha, Rebekah has twins, Jacob and Esau. Esau is born first, but Jacob wants the blessing of the first born, and his mother wants to help. Together they trick Isaac and Esau, who both get mad. Listen to the rap to see how this sibling rivalry is fought out!

Saturday morning and the peeps are here
It’s time for Shabbat – let me get a cheer
We’ll talk about creation, the garden, the great flood, too,
Ayyoo Matt, you know what to do

Now before we start, we throw it back
We had Chayei Sarah and we’re staying on track
Sarah and Abraham, too bad their time is up
Isaac meets Rebekah, and that’s what’s up

This week’s portion is the great Tol’dot
And it’s just so good you’ll wanna give it a quote
We add to our crew as Rebekah gives birth
We welcome Esau and Jacob to this mighty earth

They’re brothers alright, but nothing alike
Jacob stays at home and Esau loves to hike
And even though Esau is the first of the two
He gives Jacob his birthright for some tasty stew

Now Isaac grows old and he wants to bless
His first son Esau and set him up for success
But Rebekah hears this and starts to plot
For Jacob to deceive and not throw away his shot

So he cooks Isaac meat and wears some fur
Two things that only Esau would truly prefer
Isaac is blind so Jacob passes the test
After all this time, he is hashtag blessed
Esau is mad, you can believe
We’ll see what happens next week, when Jacob has to leave

Thanks for listening to our 27th rap
Stay tuned for more we’re putting ourselves on the map
This has been your - SHABBAT SHA’RAP!!!
