Va-et’chanan for Teens: Shabbat Sha-raps

  • Va-et’chanan for Teens: Shabbat Sha-raps

    Va-et'chanan, Deuteronomy 3:23–7:11

Moses asks and is denied entrance into the land again in this parasha. He needs to give parting words and review old and new laws; listen in to hear them all.

Ever wanted to see how relatable the Torah really is? Counselors at URJ Kutz Camp, a Reform Jewish leadership camp for teens ,wanted to do just that. They made awesome raps discussing the weekly Torah portion, or parasha, for an entire year!

Transcript

Saturday morning and the peeps are here
It’s time for Shabbat – let me get a cheer
We’ll talk about Moses, Aaron, the Levites too
Ayyoo Matt, you know what to do

I plead with you God, let me enter this Land
Let your servant see the greatness of your mighty hand
I’ve been with you through Egypt and the desert too
What else can I do, but say thank you

I’m sorry Moses, but I can’t let you go}
You made too many mistakes and I gotta say no
I feel for you man, I can understand
How you feel betrayed by my mighty hand
Enough’s enough, I’m tired of this matter
Never speak of this again, no more chatter

We revisit the Commandments that we said at Sinai
To make sure that the Children of Israel comply
We remember the prayer that we hold in our hearts
Sh’ma Yisra’eil won’t ever depart

I’m the Lord your God, No gods beside me
Don’t speak my name in vain, I do decree
Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy
Honor your mother and father, holy moly
Killing, Stealing, Adultery and more
Are some of the things that will cause a war
Don’t bear false witness and please don’t covet
These are the commandments, don’t forget

[Moses]
One last time...

[Joshua]
Why do you have to say goodbye?

[Moses]
If I say goodbye, the Children of Israel learn to move on
This land will outlive me when I’m gone
Like the scripture says:
“Everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree
And no one shall make them afraid.”
They’ll be safe in the nation we’ve made
I wanna sit under my own vine and fig tree
A moment alone in the shade
At home in this nation we’ve made
One last time

Thanks for listening to our eleventh rap
Stay tuned for more, we’re putting ourselves on the map
This has been your – Shabbat Sha’Rap!
