Sukkot Blessings
It is a mitzvah to celebrate in the sukkah. While the Torah instructs us to live in the sukkah for seven days, many choose to only eat meals in the sukkah. When eating or reciting kiddush in the sukkah, recite this blessing:
Sukkot
Seven-day fall agricultural festival associated with temporary booths or huts.
Hockey, Family, and Greed
It’s winter in Michigan. The cold weather has moved in, and sports traditions are firmly in place. The Detroit Lions are terrible (they set the NFL’s only negative perfect record of 0-16 in 2008). The Pistons will make the playoffs and lose in the first round.
Hanukkah Reconsidered: A Split in the Jewish Soul
I grew up loving this holiday – until I learned the dark side and felt like a kid discovering that there’s no Santa Claus. It turns out Hanukkah is, in part, a tale of Jew vs. Jew.
The Symbol of the Sukkah
Reclaiming the Public Square with Hanukkah Lights
According to Rashi, we light Hanukkah candles to “publicize the miracle.” What exactly is the miracle we’re publicizing – and what’s the best way for us to do so today?
sukkah
"Booth" or "hut;" temporary structure associated with the agricultural festival of Sukkot; plural: sukkot.
Listening for the Voice of Homelessness
While most readers of the Torah consider Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac as his most troubling deed, his treatment of his firstborn son, Ishmael and Ishmael’s mother, Hagar, is also deeply disturbing.
The 30th Annual International Day of Peace
There are a lot of holidays to think about this time of year: Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, International Hobbit Day (no, but really, happy birthday Bilbo and Frodo).
