Teaching Children about Respect (Kavod)

A Shaboom! Discussion and Activity Guide for 4-7 Year-Olds and Their Parents

Papa Plony is obsessed with beating the Baloney family in the annual relay race. But when Yasmin flakes out on practice, and a new team member shows up with an unexpected physical difference - he panics. SHABOOM! The Sparks come to the rescue with incredible magic, including an upside-down rainbow ramp, a giant stuffed animal and a lesson in showing kavod, or respect. Watch and find out who wins the race. Kol hakavod!

Follow Up Questions

  •  Papa did not think Lila could run the race because she is too small. Have you ever wanted to do something but a grown-up said you’re too small?
  • Do you or somebody you know need help getting from one place to another like Levi?
  • Why do you think Papa was happy even when his team did not win the race?

Related Activities

  • Say “Kol hakavod” when a child, or an adult, does something well.
  • Be open to situations where children of differing abilities are brought together. Model behavior that teaches children to be accepting and thus give kavod/respect to everyone.
  • Even though it may not be Hanukkah, read the book Jeremy’s Dreidel with your child, student, grandchild, niece or nephew.
