Mishpatim for Teens: Shabbat Sha-raps

Mishpatim, Exodus 21:1−24:18

Have you ever been curious how relatable the Torah really is? A group of staff from the Kutz365 Alumni Network decided to spend an entire year rapping the weekly Torah portion, or parasha, from the Torah. Shabbat Sha'Raps started at camp in the summer of 2016, and then grew through Zoom over the course of an entire year. Filmed from Zoom boxes around the globe, this creative interpretation of Torah is a fun and easy way to understand the weekly Torah portion. Join Evan, Matt, Melissa, and lots of special guests on this joyful journey of discovering Torah!

This week’s parasha’s title means “laws,” so it is fitting that many laws are listed: interpersonal laws, laws about ritual, and so much more. Find out details in the rap!

Saturday morning and the peeps are here
It’s time for Shabbat – let me get a cheer
We’ll talk about Pharaoh, Moses, the Red Sea too
Ayyoo Matt, you know what to do

We’re throwing it back to just last week
To NFTY Convention, it was quite on fleek
We learned about Yitro and rapped for you
Let’s learn some more about that Israelite crew

This week in the Torah it’s Mishpatim
We get a bunch of rules that ain’t mainstream
They’re kinda weird, just letting you know
We’ll rattle some off in a little rap flow

It talks about slaves, and to treat them nice
And never hit your parents, that’s good advice
Control your animals, and always be just
Don’t oppress the stranger, for that was us

Work six days and rest the next
Celebrate Shabbat, just following the text
Up on Mount Sinai, the elders go
Stay tuned for next week in the Moses show

Thanks for the love and for seeing us through
We couldn’t do this without our loyal crew
Convention in Chicago was a pretty big hit
We’ll keep it going each week and make those raps lit

Thanks for listening to our 39th rap
Stay tuned for more, we’re putting ourselves on the map
This has been your, Shabbat Sha’Raps!!!
