Sh’mini for Teens: Shabbat Sha-raps

Sh'mini, Leviticus 9:1-11:47

Have you ever been curious how relatable the Torah really is? A group of staff from the Kutz365 Alumni Network decided to spend an entire year rapping the weekly Torah portion, or parasha, from the Torah. Shabbat Sha'Raps started at camp in the summer of 2016, and then grew through Zoom over the course of an entire year. Filmed from Zoom boxes around the globe, this creative interpretation of Torah is a fun and easy way to understand the weekly Torah portion. Join Evan, Matt, Melissa, and lots of special guests on this joyful journey of discovering Torah!

In this parasha, Aaron’s sons are killed for sacrificing to an alien god by using incense. Aaron is not allowed to mourn for them. Listen to learn the laws that are given so that this won’t happen again. The second part of the parasha holds more laws.

48 weeks we’ve been doing this a lot
Melissa told us to never throw away our shot
Got some big things coming for all of you
Evan, you’re my boy, poo poo, I’m in Tucson

Saturday morning and the peeps are here
It’s time for Shabbat – let me get a cheer
We’ll talk about Moses, rituals, and holiness too
Ayyoo Matt, you know what to do

We had parashat Tzav with fire coming out
Of the tabernacle, while the people shout
We learned about Aaron and some of his crew
The priests growing up and doing what they do

Happy Passover to one and all
This week is pretty special, so we’ll have a ball
It’s just for this week, when we eat matzah
Gotta run from the bagels and the pizza

Well Moses just wants to see the face of God
Develop that relationship, it’s not that odd
But God says no, so we’ll follow that rule
God grants happiness which is pretty cool

What we learn this week is that God’s pretty sweet
And if you agree, give God a tweet
Compassionate, slow to anger, and also kind
Lots of mercy and love to all mankind

We hope your Passover is really fun
Eating that matzah in the nice, spring sun
Be careful of those 10 plagues, I hear they’re scary
Frogs, lice and boils, are no way ordinary
Death of the first born, you better watch out
Gotta put blood on the door post, time to breakout
Just remember we still got some freeing to do
Let’s work toward a better world, you and me, and all of our crew
Thanks for listening to our 47th rap
Stay tuned for more, we’re putting ourselves on the map
This has been your, Shabbat Sha’Raps!!!
